Aaron is the worst paramedic in the city. Everyone in the company knows this, even secretly joking about him behind his back. Desperate to prove himself, he scans the emergency frequencies for any hint of catastrophe, hoping to be the first on the scene. When he hears of a woman who has collapsed in her home, he rushes to the address, praying that he can be the hero. Busting through the front door, he kneels by the unconscious woman, his mind suddenly blank as to what to do next.

Momentarily frozen by his confusion, he starts rescue breaths on the young woman, hoping that any action is better than none at all. Unfortunately, this is often not the case in a medical emergency, but only the first of many mistakes that Aaron will make. Failing to tilt the woman’s head back far enough to completely clear her airway, most of the air that he breathes into her goes right to her stomach, distending it like a balloon, rather than her lungs, where it would have done some good. Switching to chest compressions, his performance improves, but the woman remains unresponsive.

Bitterly wishing that he had a partner, he continues CPR, frantically trying to think of what else he could do, but since no other paramedic will work with him, there was no one else there he could ask. His mind seized upon the memory that one should remove any restrictive clothes from the victim. Her form-fitting workout clothes looked pretty restrictive to Aaron, so he paused in his efforts to strip them off her, one-by-one, until her tight body was naked and exposed. Yet, still, the woman would not awaken.

Deciding to pull out all the stops, he begins to charge his defibrillator, neglecting to even check what sort of rhythm her heart was in. Where did he learn ACLS? Repeatedly discharging the paddles on the poor girl’s chest, her body leaps and spasms from the high voltage treatment. Haphazardly running through his gambit of life support techniques, Aaron exhausts himself, cycling through rescue breaths, chest compressions and blasts of electricity from the defibrillator. Finally, he gives up, realizing that today is not his day to be a hero. Calling in her time of death, and arranging for the pick-up of her corpse, the paramedic walks out the door, leaving the woman dead and naked, on the floor.

At autopsy, it was discovered that a pulmonary embolism was the cause of death, potentially survivable, had she received proper treatment. The state stripped Aaron of his paramedic’s license, banning him forever from acting as emergency personnel in any capacity. More serious accusations were raised by the woman’s naked corpse that was just left on the floor, raising the specter of actual jail time. Luckily, he only got charged with a misdemeanor, but the stories that followed him after that forced him to move to a different state, where he lives in anonymity and shame to this day.
