Emma’s world has just come crashing down. She received a message from her lover, a message telling her that it’s over, that their time together had been just a lie, the shock of it numbing her. Deciding to end it all, she takes a mixture of pills, strips her clothes off and lies in a warm bath, waiting for it all to end. As they take effect, Emma welcomes the drowsiness, the darkness that envelopes her, and as the drugs sap her strength, her head slides under the water. Despite her sorrow, however, despite the medications, the primal will to live is strong and, with the first lungful of water, she starts to thrash in the tub. Gasping and choking, she clamors for purchase in the slippery sides of the bath, but the drugs continue to take hold and she is soon still, face down in the water.

Her lover bursts in. The terrible message that caused Emma to despair wasn’t meant for her at all and her paramour, realizing his mistake, rushes to prevent her death. Luckily, he used to be a paramedic and still possesses both the skills and equipment to save her. Not that it will be easy. He doesn’t know what she’s taken or how long she has been underwater. Pulling her limp, naked form from the tub, he lays her on the floor and begins CPR. Pushing on her chest and blowing air into her lungs, the man works frantically to revive her, but none of it seems to be working. Reaching in his EMT bag, he begins to charge his defibrillator and holds the paddles over Emma’s chest, waiting for the green light to tell him it’s ready.

Again and again, he shocks her, each discharge of electricity into her nubile body causing her to seize, her back arching and muscles going rigid. When the defibrillator fails to achieve a pulse, he goes back to pressing on her chest, breathing into her mouth, wishing he still had some atropine or epinephrine to work with. His desperation lends him strength, but eventually exhaustion sets in and he must accept that he was too late, that the woman he loves is dead, gone forever. He weeps, holding her lifeless body in his arms and rocking slowly.
